Interactive Drumming

Interactive drumming is used to develop unity in the workplace.

The Drum Cafe provides each person with a traditional African drum – an accessible musical instrument for non-musicians. Our team of master facilitators and musicians will teach participants how to play and how to listen to one another. Within 15 minutes, the group will be making music together and be ready for a exceptional, out of the oridinary team building experience.

Background to drumming

Drumming has been used in Africa for thousands of years, to mark an occasion or to draw others near. Drums are used at births, initiations, weddings, funerals, celebrations and in preparation for battle.

The Drum Cafe has brought this powerful African method to boardrooms, conferences and a variety of functions locally as well as internationally, building teams ...one beat at a time.

What happens on the day?

The Drum Cafe team arrive approximately an hour before the starting time and set chairs up in a circle if possible (dependant on layout of the location). The circular set-up represents no hierarchy in the drum circle - all participants are on the same level.

Each participant is given a drum.

As participants enter the room, they are met with the inviting pulse of the drum. After everyone is seated in front of their drum (and most often, tapping away already), the drum facilitators start off with a drumming performance. With a repertoire of body language signals, they soon get the participants to join in with simple drumming rhythms. As the facilitation progresses, the group is taught to drum together and to make music as one.

Duration: 45-80 minutes

The philosophy behind the Drum Cafe’s drum circle

The Drum Cafe follows two main principles to achieve successful group dynamics and team building. Everyone plays the same bass rhythm; and everyone listens to one another.

By following these principles the Drum Cafe is able to build a non-competitive community that realises we are present for the same reason - to make music as one.

The powerful and direct analogy is that each individual and department plays a specific role within the company for its effective functioning. Through the Drum Cafe experience, employees realise that they are united by a common goal, and, participants directly experience the power of group energy. The significance of communication and listening is highlighted through the experience of creating music together.
